The Men's Room

No, I'm not loitering in public toilets again; it's a radio show. Get your mind out of the sewer and back to the gutter where it belongs.

Tonight on RRR between 7-8pm, myself, Glenn Manton and Tom Elliot will discuss male bonding and men's emotions on THE MEN'S ROOM, a sporadic show that looks at masculinity and men's issues.

There'll be talkback too, so feel free to call in for a chat, as well as special and expert guests, and THE ANNOUNCING OF THIS YEAR'S COMMUNITY CUP TEAMS!!!

Oh, I can taste the testosterone from here - or wait, no, maybe that's last night's one night stand...

you lovely man Richard Watts. I happened to switch my radio past 3rrr this morning while smart arts was on... i couldnt' get very good reception, so i didn't have it on for long, but you do have such a lovely voice for radio!!

Thanks tammiodo - very kind of you - I just hope that RRR listeners don't get sick of my voice given that I seem to be responsible for quite a number of sponsor announcements in addition to my other broadcasting committments!

Ha! I was just cleaning out the bottom drawer of my desk and found an old program for a play I performed in at high school - Tom Stoppard's, The Real Inspector Hound. Inside the front page reads, "... a comedy satire if high and delightful quality, and great fun. Even though you may admire murder mysteries or, what is more unlikley, drama critics, you can appreciate its wisdom and revel in the hilarity with which Mr Stoppard takes them apart. Is that you? My God, you've been tucked away in my bottom draw and softyly uttering art speak on my radio in the background for years. It looks a lot like an effort in a subliminal take-over of my concious; first me, THEN THE WORLD, or what-not.

The streets of old Fitzroy

I've lived in Fitzroy for 14 years, and long before I moved here spent some formative moment in its pubs and terrace houses. I have an unpublished novel that set's in Fitzroy in the 1940s (originally it was set in the 1950s but I've realised it was the wrong period). I love this suburb, even as it changes before my eyes, which is why I love articles and photographs and stories of its past.   From the Herald-Sun , here's a series of images of the old inner city slums that once characterised much of Fitzroy. And from The Age just yesterday, here's an article about a photographer who was documenting the vanishing post-war Fitzroy culture in 1973-74.  Happy reading.
